Canadian Landmine Awareness Week

Vancouver can take a stand for a landmine-free world when Canadian Landmine Awareness Week hits the city from March 1-7! During this week, people from across Canada will attend events, hold assemblies, and read proclamations to spread awareness and raise funds for the humanitarian crisis of landmines. Together we can cross landmines off the global to do list.

In Vancouver, Canadian Landmine Awareness Week gets an early start with a pair of events on the weekend, culminating in Paws for Peace, a 4-km dog walk-a-thon through Pacific Spirit Park in honour of the dogs across the world who help detect landmines.

Saturday, February 28, 11:00 am, Harbour Centre, Vancouver.
Landmine Speakers Forum – guest speakers to include:
  • Max Cameron, UBC Political Science
  • Professor/co-editor, To Walk Without Fear
  • Luisa Navas, UBC Political Science Masters Student, thesis on Landmines in Columbia
  • McKay Wood, Youth Mine Action Ambassador for BC
  • Leila Harding, Recording Secretary of Canadian Auto Workers Union

    Sunday, February 29, 6:30 pm, Unitarian Church, Vancouver (Oak and West 49th).
    Hearts and Mines – an evening of live music, literature and discussion
  • Performances by Euphoniously Feminist Singers, Sacred Web and Zeelia
  • Readings from Aislinn Hunter, Gayla Reid
  • Presentation by Father Freddy, Coordinator of Sri Lankan Campaign to Ban Landmines

    Monday March 1, 7:00 pm, Port Moody Inlet Theatre, Port Moody.
    Aftermath: The Remnants of War – a screening of the winner of the UNESCO Prize for Best Humanitarian Film, with presentations from:
  • Shirish Pandey, Coordinator of Youth For Peace in Nepal
  • McKay Wood, Youth Mine Action Ambassador for BC

    Sunday, March 7, 9:30 am
    PAWS for Peace – 4-km dog walk-a-thon at Pacific Spirit Park
    , starting at the Sasamat Reservoir (16th Ave and Sasamat). All donations go to the training and care of a demining dog.
    Special guests include:
  • Nazanin Afshin-Jam, Miss Canada-World
  • Shirish Pandey, Coordinator of Youth For Peace in Nepal
  • Father Freddy Coordinator of Sri Lankan Campaign to Ban Landmines
  • McKay Wood, Youth Mine Action Ambassador for BC
  • 12th Field Ambulance Canadian Reserves and 6th Field Engineers Squadron

    During these events the McKay Wood, Youth Mine Action Ambassador for BC, Shirish Pandey Youth Ambassador for Nepal Campaign to Ban Lanmines, and Father Freddy Coordinator of Sri Lankan Campaign to Ban Landmines will be available for interviews. As well as Nazanin Afshin-Jam, Miss World-Canada will be available during PAWS for Peace.
